Description
A dark check can feel wonderfully inviting when the edges are this relaxed. Cocoa windowpane lines, gathered pillow borders and a soft lilac reverse bring a gentle, slightly nostalgic mood to the bed. The washed cotton has an easy texture that suits rumpled layers, while the contrast between the checked face and plain reverse keeps the room from feeling too formal.
Place an ivory wool cushion against the checked pillows to pick up the pale grid without adding another pattern. A dark walnut bedside table echoes the cocoa ground; its smooth surface also gives the gathered cotton edges a pleasingly simple companion.
- Washed cotton: A softly textured fabric brings an easy, relaxed feel to the bed without needing a perfectly smooth finish.
- Windowpane checks: Fine pale lines stand out against a cocoa ground, offering a defined pattern that still feels quietly understated.
- Gathered borders: Ruffled pillow edges soften the straight grid and give the top of the bed a gently decorative finish.
- Contrasting reverse: A plain lilac underside creates a lighter accent when folded back, adding another way to arrange the checked bedding.

Warmer on humid nights
It breathes well on most nights, though during a humid week the washed cotton felt warmer than the linen set we use in summer.
Kept to the back bedroom
It lives in the back bedroom where the light is low, and the cocoa ground suits that room far better than the pale bedding we had.
The dark bed feels snug at night, though the cocoa makes the room a little dimmer than expected.
Plain bedding underneath
It looks best with a plain lilac or cream sheet underneath and a simple light, so the checks stay the main pattern in the room.
Texture like the description
It has the softly textured finish the listing describes, and it looks a little more rumpled on the bed than it does on screen.
Good on our deep mattress
The fitted sheet covers our deep mattress without lifting at the corners, and the duvet is generous enough to hang evenly on both sides.
The lilac reverse shows when I turn the cover back, and mornings feel softer for it.
My partner likes the checks
My partner usually prefers plain bedding and he likes these windowpane checks, which says something about how calm they look.
Would like a deeper colour
The set is exactly the calm look I wanted, and the only thing I would add is an even deeper cocoa option for our darker room.
Good in the morning and evening
In the morning it looks warm against the pale walls, and in the evening with the lamp on the cocoa ground feels especially cosy.
Grid lines are consistent
The windowpane lines run evenly across the duvet and the pillows, though one pillowcase is very slightly off the grid at the seam.
Cocoa is deeper in person
The cocoa ground is a shade deeper in person than the listing shows, and the pale lines stand out more strongly in daylight.
Check the pillow size
The duvet size worked for us, though the pillowcases are generous and our standard pillows sit a little loose inside them.
Soft and gently rumpled
The washed cotton feels soft and slightly rumpled in the hand, with none of the crispness that makes new checked bedding look rigid.
The checks are softer and less formal than the dark bedding it replaced.
Sent to my brother
I sent a set to my brother for his flat and he likes it, though the cocoa is darker in his room than he had expected.
Out again in autumn
It came out of the cupboard as soon as the nights cooled and has stayed on the bed since, and the washed cotton had not gone stiff.
Insert goes in easily
The opening is wide enough to work the duvet insert through without struggling, and the cover sits smoothly once it is closed.
Throw keeps it soft
An ivory wool throw at the foot softens the cocoa ground, though a patterned throw competes with the checks and looks busy.
Dark walnut suits it
It suits our dark walnut bedside table and an ivory wool cushion, and the pale grid stops the dark ground from feeling heavy.
Ordered the same again
I ordered the same cocoa check a second time for our spare room, because the dark ground has proved far easier to keep looking tidy.
Cocoa windowpane checks, washed cotton, gathered borders, lilac reverse.
Warm for a cotton set
It is comfortable for most of the year with the right insert, though on one hot night the washed cotton felt warmer than we wanted.
The pale windowpane lines on the cocoa ground keep a dark bed from feeling heavy.
